Australia – Great Ocean Road

Day 50 – Sad to leave Melbourne but excited for what lay ahead. Our first day was Melbourne to Apollo Bay. We made various random stops along the journey. There was this excellent cliff. $2 for scale – which we had found right there! Clearly, we will be able to supplement our income on this adventure.

Many gorgeous view points along the way.

Long sections of the road were right on the cliff – fun and exciting! Brent hadn’t slept well after being woken up by a spider on his arm in the middle of the night but Bron’s such a great driver he even fell asleep on the twisty road. He was a trooper though and agreed to stop at lighthouses and waterfalls.

In Apollo Bay by mid-afternoon there was much to explore. It is a great spot with many trails, long expanses of well packed sand beach, and gorgeous trees.

Day 51 – With Brent feeling much better after a spider-free night we were ready for the most famous sight on the road – The 12 6 Apostles. (Or do you get partial credit for the small piles of rock in the surf? There is certainly no longer 12 prominent rock bluffs in the water) First up though was another lighthouse. Brent really enjoyed the park ranger info talk, and Bron really enjoyed the fresh baked famous scones with cream and jam.

There were also koalas in the trees by the road. It’s always nice to see them, but as they were much further away (higher up) than on Magnetic Island pictures weren’t worthwhile.

There were many stops along the way. Lots of them were really cool cliff formations (including the Apostles, which were pretty good)..

I will admit that at the very end, after about 10 of these stops, it did feel a bit like ‘one cool cliff formation is much like the next’.

The Razorback

On to Port Fairy for a night in a most lovely garden cottage with llamas and chickens milling about in the yard. The guest book even says to help ourselves to eggs from the chicken coop (how neat!).

Day 52 – In our lovely cottage, waking up to the birds and llamas! View from bed:

Off for a walk before it gets too hot. With forecast temps above 40 degrees we needed to take advantage of the morning relative cool. Unfortunately the bush flies had the same idea. We swatted our way around Griffith Island (the colours and views were great which made up for the flies a bit).

There were sights and attractions on the road to Robe (our destination for the night) but at 39-40 on the dash thermometer we just couldn’t face getting out to do anything. Like a furnace!

Once evening had cooled off the furnace a bit, we went to see the Obelisk of Robe. It was a marker used for navigation and later used to store rockets to launch safety gear to boats in distress. Brent commented, “I cannot believe I traveled to Australia to see en explosives magazine!” The view was pretty good though.

Day 53 – Morning brought warming temperatures. Before things go too hot, we found a little breakfast and went for a stroll. Seems even though Robe has deep wells to provide water, it is still very salty. Sadly, this water is used to make coffee in the local establishments. Not our best cuppa today!! “This coffee is making me thirsty!”

Long Beach had some beautiful sights, and we took in about an hour’s walk out on the sand. A portion of the beach was accessible by car, and families were busy settling themselves having driven out on to the sand.

Our base while in the Adelaide area is just south of the city, in Hallett Cove. We are situated up on the hill above the sea. Sunset tonight was fantastic and a nice conclusion to a very warm day (46 degrees at one point).
